Black Steel & Mild Steel Engineering

What is Black Steel?

Black steel fabrication involves the shaping, cutting, and assembly of black steel materials to create various products and structures. Unlike stainless steel, which is known for its corrosion resistance and shiny appearance, black steel has a dark, uncoated finish and is primarily made up of iron and carbon.

In New Zealand, black steel fabrication is crucial in construction, infrastructure, and manufacturing. It is commonly used for structural components, pipelines, and machinery where corrosion resistance is not the primary concern.

Black vs Mild Steel

Mild steel and black steel are often confused due to their similar appearance, but they differ in terms of carbon content, properties, and applications. Mild steel is a low carbon steel alloy known for its affordability and versatility, while black steel refers to steel that has not been surface-treated and is often associated with carbon steel.

Black Steel

Black steel refers to steel that has not been coated with any surface treatment, such as galvanization or painting, giving it a characteristic dark, matte finish. While black steel can refer to various types of steel, it is often associated with carbon steel, which typically has a higher carbon content than mild steel. Carbon steel, including black steel, is stronger and harder than mild steel but is also less ductile and more prone to corrosion. Black steel is commonly used in applications where aesthetics are not a primary concern, such as structural components, pipes, and fittings.

Mild Steel:

Mild steel, also known as low carbon steel, is an alloy of iron and carbon with a relatively low carbon content, typically ranging from 0.05% to 0.25%. It is one of the most commonly used types of steel due to its affordability, versatility, and ease of fabrication. Mild steel is characterised by its ductility, weldability, and malleability, making it suitable for a wide range of applications, including construction, automotive, and machinery. It has a relatively soft and smooth surface and is often coated or painted for corrosion protection.
